[WEB SECURITY] DDOS extortion

I can find lots of news stories from 2004 about extortion of online
gambling sites, and others, through DDOS attacks.  Are those attacks
still occuring, but no longer newsworthy?  Or did somebody come up
with decent strategies for fending them off?
